Capitol Evacuated After Powdery Substance Found
The House chamber and the areas immediately surrounding it were evacuated briefly Monday after a powdery substance was seen on the chamber's floor about noon, but the substance turned out to be harmless, authorities said.
"Nothing hazardous was found," said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Capitol Police, about 1 p.m.
The restricted area had included the chamber itself, the galleries for reporters and visitors and some adjoining hallways. The Capitol building remains open for business.
