Canadian War Dead Pass Milestone

Jules Crittenden reports that the Canadian military in Afghanistan has passed a grim milestone:

Canada’s 145th Afghan war death goes home. National Post on Col. Geoff Parker, killed the Kabul bombing. Here’s the Vancouver Sun on the death of Pvt. Kevin McKay, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, killed a few days earlier.

As long as we’re counting, and we are, Canada with a 10th of our population has paid a proportionately higher cost in blood in Afghanistan.

I was highly, even insultingly critical in years past of Canada when her elected and appointed officials were rudely disparaging the United States, the U.S. president and the war in Iraq, given how the Great White North skated for decades, largely gratis and with not a little ingratitude, under the security of an American military umbrella. Canada has pulled her weight in combat in Afghanistan, recalling the commitment demonstrated by this nation, so often large in spirit if small in numbers, in World War II and Korea. Too bad the Canadians are pulling out next summer.
