Brown Should be Sworn in Quickly

Written by Henry Clay on Tuesday January 19, 2010

The Democratic majority in the Senate has the power to seat Scott Brown, the obvious landslide choice of the people of the Commonwealth, on Wednesday. And it should.

Martha Coakley has conceded a race that was not even close.  The Constitution makes the Senate the "judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members."  This is not a difficult issue.  As the Massachusetts Secretary of State noted earlier today, the Democratic majority in the Senate has the power to seat Scott Brown, the obvious landslide choice of the people of the Commonwealth, tomorrow.  And it should.  Dr. Dean had it right tonight when he congratulated Scott Brown on his victory and referred to him as "Senator Scott Brown."  Senate Republicans should be preparing their speeches.  They should insist that Scott Brown be sworn in post haste.
