Bomber Attacks Iraqi Shiite Pilgrims
A suicide bomber targeting Shiite pilgrims killed at least 28 people and wounded at least 24 near the Iraqi city of Samarra on Saturday, officials said.
Authorities said the bomber blew himself up in a crowd of pilgrims just 200 yards outside the al-Askari mosque.
Many Shiite pilgrims are in Samarra to mark the death of one of their 12 revered imams in 874.
A 2006 bombing that destroyed the golden domed mosque sparked years of retaliatory bloodshed between Sunnis and Shiites.
Samarra is 62 miles north of Baghdad.
