Bill to Stump for Rahm

Politico reports:

Bill Clinton will stump for Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday, despite warnings from some of Chicago’s top African-American Democrats that the former president should stay out of the city’s mayoral race.

Clinton will host a rally for Emanuel at the Chicago Cultural Center, Emanuel’s camp announced late Thursday.

After word came from Emanuel last month that Clinton would be campaigning for him at some point before the Feb. 22 primary, a handful of African-Americans also running for mayor spoke out and told the former president to stay out.

Emanuel leads former senator Carol Moseley Braun 42 percent to 26 percent in a poll of 500 likely voters conducted last week for the Chicago Teamsters Joint Council. Other candidates in the race got the support of 10 percent or fewer of those surveyed.

Rep. Danny Davis, an African-American who has since dropped out of the race, said in December that Clinton could damage his relationship with the city’s African-American community by getting involved in the race. “The African American community has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the Clintons,” Davis said.

But, he said, “it appears as though some of that relationship maybe fractured and perhaps even broken should former President Clinton come to town and participate overtly in efforts to thwart the legitimate political aspirations of Chicago’s black community.” ...
