Big Crowd, Small Demographic

The attendees at the Stewart-Colbert rally are the upper half of the Obama coalition: young, educated, urbane, and feeling less economic distress than others.

A sign seen at the Stewart/Colbert rally sums up the Democratic dilemma in the impending elections: "things are pretty good actually".  And while there is distress everywhere in 2010 America, this crowd probably feels less than most. Here is the upper half of the Obama coalition; young, educated, urbane. Also overwhelmingly white.

For the bottom half of the coalition, however, things are not "pretty good." They have seen scant benefit in almost 2 years. They are not attending this genteel, ironic rally- and they are not likely to turn out on Tuesday.
