Beinart: Israel Can't Be "As Liberal As I Would Like"
In an interview with The Forward Peter Beinart concludes: "I accept the tragic necessity of a Jewish state that can never be as fully liberal as I would like."
Peter Beinart gives an interview to the Forward that concludes:
I accept the tragic necessity of a Jewish state that can never be as fully liberal as I would like.
Beinart's words reminded me of a favorite exchange. The New England transcendentalist Margaret Fuller was fond of dramatically announcing to audiences: "I accept the universe." Somebody repeated the remark to the notoriously grumpy Thomas Carlyle. His reply: "She accepts the universe? Gad - she'd better."
