Bayh's Retirement Leaves Tough Questions

Written by David Frum on Monday February 15, 2010

Evan Bayh's decision to retire leaves many questions. For starters, did Bayh provide the Obama White House with any significant advance warning of his decision to quit? If not, why not - he just dealt a harsh blow to a president of his own party after all?

Questions to which I'd like answers:

1) Did Bayh provide the Obama White House with any significant advance warning of his decision to quit? It doesn't look that way. If not, why not - he just dealt a harsh blow to a president of his own party after all?

2) Was Bayh meting payback to the Democratic left for its emphatic and unconcealed hostility to him and to his wife - derided not only by left bloggers but by establishment Democrats for her service on the board of health insurance company Wellpoint?

3) How much do Bayh's angry words at departure indicate a broader unhappiness among red-state Democrats with the pressures put on them by the Obama White House?
