Average Age of Dem House Leaders: 70
Tom Diemer at Politics Daily reports:
Politics is not a child's game, so House Democrats don't seem overly concerned about aging issues when it comes to their septuagenarian leadership. Amid a sea of young, new faces on Capitol Hill, the average age of the Democratic hierarchy is just over 70.
"There they go again," said the new minority whip, Rep. Steny Hoyer, taking questions from reporters Thursday -- and copping a line from a 70-something President Ronald Reagan, according to the AP. Marylander Hoyer, who came to office in 1981 during Reagan's first year in the White House, said he felt good, and besides, serving in Congress is about experience, not age. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, elected minority leader Wednesday, is 70, the same age as the assistant minority leader, Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.).
By comparison, Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), who will become speaker of the House in January, is a young whippersnapper. He turned 61 on Wednesday.
His counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, celebrates his 71st birthday early next month. And the gentleman from Kentucky, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, is 68.
Oh, and let's not forget the president of the Senate, Vice President Joe Biden, whose 68th birthday is Saturday.
