If the president believes that Gen McChrystal is doing a good job then it's the president's job and duty to tell everybody in his administration offended by McChrystal's indiscreet words that they must accept McChrystal's apology.

Good generals sometimes have ego issues. Good generals sometimes say indiscreet things. And sometimes good politicians have to protect their generals from themselves.
